AVMLA List Serve

Instructions

Introduction:

A list serve is an automated messaging service.  It allows a group to share information using e-mail like messages.  There are several modes of implementing your participation, based on your interest and tolerance to e-mail traffic.

Appropriate Use:

The server is for the sole use of members in good standing of the AVMLA.  It is not to be used for commercial solicitation.  Information on it is private to the Association and the individual authors and must not be released to outside parties without permission.  The Association reserves the right to delete any contribution which is deemed a solicitation, illegal, violation of intellectual property rights, in bad taste or offensive to the membership and purpose of this Association.  Members may be banned from this server for such violations.

Finding it:

The list serve is accessed by entering the following URL into your Internet browser.

http://listserv.vetmed.wsu.edu/read/   <--Link to List Serve
NOTE: The software has been updated.  The /read/ on the end of the URL is essential.  Otherwise you get sent to the administrator's entry and you won't get in!

If you type this, please note that the last 'E' is missing from listserv.vetmed

NOTE: You are leaving the AVMLA web site and going to Washington State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, where the List Serve is hosted.

 Opening screen

Choose American Veterinary Medical Law Association  (click on it)

It will ask for your e-mail address

Your e-mail address is the one you provided to the AVMLA.  You can change this as you wish, but your first log in must be with the one we associated with you. You must have a valid e-mail address to participate in this List. Only e-mail from this 'registered' address will be admitted to the List.

Password:

Your password is a random 8 character code.  It is case sensitive.  Your notification letter includes a character key to help you determine '1' (one) versus 'l' (lower case L) and '0' (zero) versus 'O' (upper case O).  You may change your password later, but your first logon, must be with the one we sent you.  Passwords are the major security component.  If this list serve becomes compromised, it will become a liability rather than an asset.  The random password you have been assigned is 1 of 1059 possible.  A supercomputer guessing 1 million times a second would take 1041 years to try them all.  If you do change your password please do not use one easily guessed.  Use characters and letters and avoid any word that can be found in a dictionary.

This screen allows you to see the most recent messages.  You can read one by clicking on the SUBJECT.

You can change your settings by going to the My Account button.  The first tab is called Essentials.  Here is where you can enter a new e-mail account (or change your name!).  It also allows to select the kind of service you want...

Participation method:

This is the place you designate how you want to interact with the list serve.

Options:

NORMAL: any message sent to or posted on this server will be sent to you as an e-mail message the instant it is released by the administrators.

DIGEST: all messages will be concatenated into a single message and sent to you once a day.

INDEX: all the subject lines of the day's traffic will be assembled and sent to you once a day.  You have to login with your browser to read the full text.  This is the default participation method selected when your account was created.

NO EMAIL: The list serve will not send you any messages.  You can still login and browse the messages using your web browser.  Your e-mail to the server will be accepted or you can create messages using your browser.

Advanced Tab

This will allow you reset your password.  The security for this server has been updated and made very paranoid.  We used to be able to login as the administrator and see what your password was if you forgot.  Now if you change it you MUST remember it because we cannot access it (without getting the NSA to help).  So if you loose your password, contact the Webmaster and he can reset it to something new you choose.

Communication

You may login using your browser to read contributions or create a new one.  You may also submit a contribution by e-mailing avmla@listserv.vetmed.wsu.edu NOTE: the word listserv has the last 'E' dropped off in both the URL and the e-mail address.

You must use the e-mail address we associated with your avmla user account for the system to accept your contribution.  If you are unable to use your primary e-mail account, then you can still post contributions by logging on using your browser.

Moderation:

Messages submitted to the List are held pending release by the administrators.  This is a security check, not a censorship attempt.  If there is any doubt that the message is authentic, then we will verify it with the apparent author.  The first major spam incident on the web was a legal firm offering assistance in obtaining a 'green card'.  We take the integrity of this Association and its members seriously.  A List is a great way to spam a specific group.  We are working hard to keep this List from being so compromised.  We freely admit the password issued you is beyond belief.  This group consists of people concerned about security, therefore that is what the founders requested.

Help:

The list administrator is Dr. Dave Barbee.  His contact information is on the web site.
