Current Active Members are  veterinarians licensed to practice veterinary medicine and/or attorneys licensed to practice law and who reside in a recognized district of the American Veterinary Medical Law Association (AVMLA).  Current Active members shall be entitled to all rights and privileges of the Association. Individuals who are pursuing advanced degrees beyond a DVM or JD are considered Current Active Members, as opposed to Student Members.

Associate Members are individuals, not otherwise qualified to join as active members or students, whose interests are compatible with the AVMLA as determined by the Board, or organizations (e.g., association, institutions, corporations, governmental agencies, etc.) whose activities are substantially related to veterinary medicine or veterinary medical law as determined by the Board. Organizations which join shall designate an individual to represent them. This representative may be changed upon written notice to the Board. Associate members shall be entitled to all rights and privileges of the Association, except they shall not have the right to vote or to hold office.

Student Members are individuals who are enrolled in an accredited School or College of Veterinary Medicine recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association or an accredited School or College of Law recognized by the American Bar Association or any other state or provincial bar association.  Student Members shall be entitled to all rights and privileges of the Association, except that they shall not have the right to vote nor to hold office. Individuals qualifying for AVMLA membership who possess a JD or DVM, but are pursuing an advanced degree are not eligible for student membership. Such individuals are considered Current Active Members.
